Jurassic

Age Interval:
Middle Jurassic, J2 (TJ16, TJ17).

Province:
Xinjiang

Type Locality and Naming

It was named by the Compiler

Jingeng Sha (coordinator) Group for the Regional Stratigraphic Chart of the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region in 1981. The naming section is located in the Wucha Coal Mine on the western bank of the Kuzygongzu River, with the section on the southern bank of the Yarkant River of Arketao County and the Kurjirga section in the Kyzyl region, Xinjiang serving as its reference sections. Upper (third of four) formation in Ye'erqiang Gr (= Yarkant Gr).

Synonym: (杨叶组)

Lithology and Thickness

The formation is composed of grey and grey-black schistose mudstones, intercalated with thin-bedded and massive sandstones, carbonaceous mudstones and thin layers of marls, coal beds and a small amount of conglomerates, with a thickness of 544 m.

Lithology Pattern:
Sandy claystone

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It is in a conformable contact with the underlying Kangsu Fm. In the area of salt-works the formation overlies directly the Proterozoic strata.

Upper contact

It is in a conformable contact with the overlying Ta'erga Fm

Regional extent

The particular formation is distributed on the southern foothill of the Tianshan Mts and the northern foothill of the Kunlun Mts. Within the Kunlun Mts (the Gongger Mts and Arqiang region) and on the southern margin (the Yingjisha region) of the Tarim Basin the particular formation has not been subdivided clearly yet.

GeoJSON

null

Fossils

It yields bivalve fossils such as Pseudocardinia carinata, P. turkensis, P. asiatica, P. sibirensis, P. elongata, P. lanceolata, P. ventricosa, P. ferganensis and Sibireconcha anodontoides; Gastropod fossils as represented by Bithynia sp.; and plant fossils as represented by Coniopteris hymenophylloides and Todites williamsoni.
